Basic Info + History + World View
Name: Moira Rosemary Bower.
Age: 31 going on 32
Birthdate: May 8th, 1986
Zodiac: Taurus
Supernatural Status: Half-witch and half-fae (witch on her mother's side; fae on her father's)
Powers & Abilities: Like the magic of Harry Potter, Moira knows a variety of spells, charms, incantations, etc. For example, she can charm things to fly and she can transfigure a tea cup into a kitten. She can brew potions and tend to herbs for her magic as well. Her magic varies in terms of what it accomplishes, and the more complicated the spell, the more it takes out of Moira to use it. She uses a wand to focus her magical energy though she's also capable of wandless magic. Wandless magic just tends to be messier, less refined, and less powerful than that used by a wand.
However, instead of Latin spells, the magic of Moira's world requires spells in the form of poems, which makes casting them a bit tedious. Unlike Harry Potter, spells, charms, etc. can be cast ahead of time and "bottled" in an object for quick release when the situation calls for it. Like a bath bomb but for magic, one might say. Moira's objects of choice are usually bottles of nail polish, for ease and convenience.
Also, witches tend to focus/specialize in certain types of magic, in addition to basic magic skills. For Moira, she considers herself a "sea witch." She's loved the water her whole life (truly her father's daughter) and spends as much time as she can by, in, or around the water. She scries with water (a method of divining the future, though water is the least accurate of possibilities that include: fire, mirrors, earth, and stone. She can also communicate to other magic users via water: puddles, ponds, rivers, etc. She can swim underwater for indeterminate amounts of time using her magic, whether a charm or a potion, and spells involving water just seem to come easier in general. She's powerful enough to summon rain, if she so chooses. She speaks fluent Merperson, also.
As the daughter of a water nymph, the water gives her more energy/restores her energy faster. Spells, enchantments, charms, potions, etc. involving water work much more efficiently, and she can harnass the essence of water into orbs of power to throw at enemies in the midst of battle. She's also marked as a nymph by a birthmark revealed on her stomach that looks more like a seahorse tattoo.
She can also shapeshift, an ability she's worked hard to acheive for a good part of her life. Her form of choice is an orca.
Moira is an especially strong and competent witch, aided by her powers as a half-fae. She isn't a god, however, and can be defeated by other magic users.
Sexuality: Quietly bisexual & content with being single. If love happens, it happens. If not, that's fine too.
Family: Believes herself to be an only child when, in fact, she has an older half-brother, George, from one of her mother's liasons who was stranded in the human world, unaware of his nature/heritage.
Her father, Barclay Bower, who she was always closest to, died in a violent duel with a witch when Moira was twelve. Barclay spent his time with his family in hiding, disguising his true nature as a fae, specifically as that of a water nymph. Moira never knew while her father was alive, given the tensions between the fae and witches. It is rumored that the discovery of Barclay as a fae is what lead to the duel that would ultimately kill him.
She grew up with her mother, Celia Bower, and her mother's younger brother, Bertram Beaumont, who moved in to help raise her and tend to the family farm.
Moira, in trying to recover from the loss of her father, grew especially close to her cousin Mariah Beaumont, daughter of Celia and Bertram's brother, Avery. Mariah, only a year older, turned as a vampire at the age of twenty-one. Moira, Bertram, and Celia are the only members of the family who still speak to her.
Religion: Moira is a person of faith. She adheres to the teachings of Bryony the Bright, one third of a sacred trilogy of gods and goddesses. Moira isn't necessarily loud but she is vocal and proud of her faith. She likes to pray at the local temple when she feels particularly stressed. She's also finding herself drawn to following the teachings of the Lady of the Lake, Morgana, lately.
Work: Moira currently works as an assistant at the local center of magical, marine life. She focuses, particularly, on water horses. She also helps out at the family farm when she can. Despite tensions with her mother, Moira is family-orientated and considers herself devout to them. (Except Mariah's part of the family, given that they're a bunch of assholes.)
Lives: The town of Gabriel's Horn, Massachusetts. She rents a slightly dismal flat above the local pub, The Knight and The Selkie, down by the water. (Owned by a former lover.) She currently lives alone with her cat, Violet, and her water horse, Cinnamon, who lives just in her backyard of the literal ocean.
Moira's History/Background:
- Born May 8th, 1986 to Barclay and Celia Bower. (George Bower is born to Celia and her former lover two years prior. George remains with his human father.)
- Moira enjoys a mostly happy childhood, growing up and remaining in Gabriel's Horn, Massachusetts her entire life.
- May 2, 1999 Moira loses her father to a magical duel with a dark witch, Niall Smith, who lured Barclay into battle.
- Following the loss of her father, Moira began to act out. She got into fights with other students/her friends, and her magic grew reckless and wild from the strength of her grief, anger, and other deep emotions.
- Her mother eventually got Moira into magical therapy, which she stuck with for a few years.
- At age 13, during one of these therapy sessions, Moira discovered the truth of her heritage.(Half witch and half fae.)
- November 8th, 2001: Moira, her cousin Mariah, and their mutual friend Anya, a Russian selkie, tried to summon the ghost of Moira's father. Instead, they summoned a gaggle of water demons and a sea serpent. They all almost died, were it not for the intervention of the local police witches and vampires.
- Following this accident, Moira finally turns her life around, given that she spends the night in jail, winds up under house arrest for the next six months, and is sentenced to community service.
- Moira joins the Junior Magical Officers League while at high school. She also joins the swim team and takes up dancing, both of which become beloved hobbies of hers.
- Unknown to her at the time, her brother, George, briefly stumbled through the veil seperating Gabriel's Horn from the human world. In accidentally shoving into her, he's the one who inadvertantly saved her life.
- It's during this time that the corruption of the Council for Sanctuary and Peace becomes even more rampant and apparent. In response, two gangs of extremist views (Wand Workers, the witches, and Faes for Organic Magic, the Faes) come together to form a seemingly moderate political party, Extended Branches, meant as a front to disguise their attacks against other species in the hopes of sparking all-out war.
- Their most pressing goal, however, is to take over Gabriel's Horn and its potent source of energy, a sacred stone said to have come to America from Avalon itself, blessed by Morgana of the Lake.
- Moira graduates high school at age 18 and undergoes the ceremony to come of age and fully realize her powers
- With scholarships and the help of her family, Moira is able to attend magical university in Scotland, her father's home country, and the same school he attended.
- Moira studies Magical Marine Life & Magical Biology, with a minor in Potions and Herbs of the Sea
- She dates around in college, experimenting
- Irene is her longest lasting relationship to date, having been with her for a year and a half in college
- Moira graduates with honors in 2008 and returns home to Gabriel's Horn, securing a job at the local lab
- As much as she loves traveling and wants to see the world, she loves her town too much to live elsewhere
- As tensions mount, Moira becomes involved with a group fighting against Extended Branches calling themselves Thorns & Brambles.
- Post-graduation, Moira finally discovers she has an older brother, George.
- She tries to reach out to him, but Extended Branches, threatened by his existence and his potential, keeps him out of reach.
- Moira spends much of her twenties fighting against Extended Branches and trying to get through to her brother. She also helps Mariah and Anya with their own struggles as well.
- She finally fully realizes her ability to shapeshift into an orca at 25.
- At 29, she finally makes contact with George, who is 31.
- They initially have a tense and terse relationship, George stubbornly refusing to believe what Moira tries to teach him about who he is and what he is.
- It takes them over a year to fully trust one another and for George to come to peace with his heritage.
- Moira feels strangely protective over him and helps him study magic.
- They also have an ex in common. It's as awkward as it sounds.
- Though Moira convinces him to join Thorns & Brambles, the group proves as corrupt as Extended Branches, and falls apart.
- Currently, Moira is balancing work, family life, and fighting evil.
Personality: Moira Bower is a whole tangled knot of a woman. At least, that's how she feels best describes her. She's complicated, stubborn as hell, and she wants to put evil back in its place. She is a flawed, intelligent, and capable person trying to do her best in a world that seems unable to keep itself from falling apart.
As a child, Moira essentially had the perfect life: lone daughter of a loving family. But then her father was killed, and all the secrets behind her facade of a life came pouring out: her mother had a child from a previous relationship she never told her about, her father was actually murdered, and Moira herself could potentially be in danger. It was a lot for any young child to take in, and Moira did not take it well.
She grew from a gentle, bright, and adventurous girl into a wayward and reckless preteen, which culminated after she learned of her true heritage as half fae and nearly died trying desperately to contact her father's wandering spirit.
From there, Moira grew into a serious, studious, and reserved young adult, of which she remains to this day. Frightened of the strength of her own emotions, she tends to try and keep all of her feelings inside, which always backfires on her, usually in some sort of explosion of her magic. (She accidentally turned a well-meaning peer into a frog once while on her period.) She keeps her heart close to her chest, scared of losing as much as she's already lost.
And yet despite her fears, Moira is bold in other ways. She loves the water, spending as much time as she can there. She never feels as safe as she does when she's riding her water horse, Cinnamon, in the middle of a violent storm in the ocean. (Though one could argue that this also means she's never really lost her reckless streak.)
Moira is hard-working and determined, trying to work against the forces of evil in the world and use her magic in her work to better the world as a whole. If she were to be sorted into Hogwarts, her house would be Hufflepuff.
She has a hard time socializing beyond her comfort zone. Mariah and Anya remain her closest friends. And she tends to hold grudges forever, once she feels she's been slighted.
She's a dreamer who likes to imagine a world at peace. And the way the water of the ocean looks in the aftermath of a storm, gray mist rising off the waves like its own kind of magic.
She's a woman of faith who doesn't take kindly to religious skeptics, or those who have no tolerance for differing religious beliefs. She loves her family dearly, despite the various strains within, and she would do anything for those she holds dearest in her heart as family and friends.
She has a quirky sense of humor that people always tell her comes straight from her father. Dancing, riding, and swimming are three of her greatest loves.
Her favorite song is "My Heart Will Go On" and she doesn't give a damn what you think. (Which is to say: yes, she is a hopeless romantic and a complete sap, thanks for asking.)
She loves chocolate, and chocolate-covered cranberries are her absolute favorite. Her favorite drink is rum and coke. She loves tea, but coffee remains her one true love, the blacker the better. She doesn't like political extremes on either end of the spectrum.
World Overview: Moira comes from a world in which magic is and always has been real. Magic that exists secretly among the real world, though very few normal humans know of its existence. Faeries, witches, wizards, vampires, shapeshifters, elves, werewolves, angels, demons, as well as other supernatural creatures and beings exist, though they don't all get along. Though those who can pass for human (werewolves and shapeshifters untransformed, vampires at night, witches, etc.) blend and interact often with the regular world, generally, they keep to themselves. They try, at least, but the two worlds over converge, and it's often messy and sometimes violent.
Those with magic and those of the supernatural persuasion live in their own towns, cities, and villages, all attached to human ones but rendered invisible/inaccessible by magic. Of course, that doesn't prevent people from stumbling through or out of these places. They have their own schools and school systems, their own businesses, etc.
There exists a magical government, called the Council for Sanctuary and Peace. Mirrored after American democracy, it's meant to foster peace and look out for magical and supernatural people. Currently, at Moira's point of existence, very few people trust the government, convinced it's long been corrupt by some dark force. (It has, in fact, been taken over by a vengence demon, Lyla, who wants only to sow chaos and destruction by starting a war between everyone.)
Tensions are high among every race, particularly witches and the fae. Each mistrusts the other deeply, both sides convinced that the other means to start a war to entirely eradicate the other. They have a long, dark history of killing each other and selling each other out. And yet there is a fairly sizable population of half-witches and half-faes, despite the tension. They tend to struggle for acceptance outside of their own families, however, considered freaks at large by everyone else. Generally, any revealed match between a witch and fae is considered something of a scandal.
There are numerous other tensions between every other race, but the conflict between the fae and the witches is the most prominent and severe.
Various extremists groups and counterextremist groups have arisen in this environment, and the atmosphere is generally fraught, with people unsure of where or when war might break out. But war does seem inevitable.
